From Trappatoni, to Martin O Neill and now to Mick McCarthy, we have constantly played with a 4-2-3-1/ 4-4-2 formation. So it is time we changed it up and looked at displaying a formation that might just get the most of out these players. Let’s take a look at the 3-5-2.
Darren Randolph is of course in goals, no matter the formation.
If we go onto the centre backs, John Egan, Shane Duffy and Ciaran Clark are all playing in this formation with their clubs so this has to be a no brainer, they’d all fit in perfectly. Seamus Coleman is even playing as a right centre back of a three for Everton at the moment, so we’ve plenty of options.
The wings backs are similar, Matt Doherty and Enda Stevens have been two of the best wing backs in the league this season. Even the back up cover of Ryan Manning and Cyrus Christie would flourish in this role.
Three central midfielders gives you plenty of legs, you could have one player sitting like a Glenn Whelan or James McCarthy. That would allow the likes of Hourihane and Alan Browne to get forward and get into the box where they could be deadly.
A front two up top, Didzy (David McGoldrick) linking up the play and imagine Aaron Connolly using that pace to get in behind. What a goal threat we’d have!
This formation really excites me, I’d love to see it given a proper run out, I can’t see how it wouldn’t be a success!
