The January Transfer Window – Irish Players

The transfer window can be an interesting month for players and their clubs. Transfers can be made for players until transfer deadline day which is the 31st of January. There have been plenty of Irish players making the move to different clubs over the course of the month which will hopefully give them more first team action. Some of the transfers from this month have been listed below. 

Darren Randolph to West Ham (£4 million)

On the 15th of January, Irish goalkeeper Darren Randolph joined West Ham from Middlesbrough on a three and a half year contract for a fee of £4 million. This is Randolph’s second stint at the club and he will be battling it out with Lukasz Fabianski to be first choice keeper for West Ham. Randolph will be confident he can perform well for the Hammers when called upon.

Callum Robinson to West Brom (Loan)

On the 29th of January, Irish forward Callum Robinson joined West Brom on loan from Sheffield United until the end of the season. Robinson will be seeking more minutes on the pitch with his new side West Brom, who are currently second in the Championship. He will be hopeful of scoring a few goals to put him in contention for Ireland’s play off in March.

Glen Whelan to Fleetwood Town (Free)

On the 24th of January, Irish midfielder Glen Whelan joined League One side Fleetwood Town until the end of the season after being released from Scottish outfit Hearts. This move for Whelan will give him the opportunity to gain much needed game time ahead of March. Fleetwood, who are currently 6 points off play off places, will be pleased to bring in a player with the experience that Whelan possess. 

Aiden McGeady to Charlton (Loan)

On the 30th of January, Irish winger Aiden McGeady joined Charlton on loan from Sunderland until the end of the season. McGeady was told he could leave Sunderland this month after a training ground incident. Charlton are currently 4 points above relegation in the Championship so McGeady will be eager to perform for his new club.

Lee O’Connor to Patrick Thistle (Loan)

On the 21st of January, Irish under 21 right back Lee O’Connor joined Scottish side Patrick Thistle on loan from Celtic until the end of the season. O’Connor will get first team opportunity at Patrick Thistle who are currently in the relegation zone of the Scottish Championship. Both Stephen Kenny and Mick McCarthy have been impressed by O Connor’s performances for the national side.

Zack Elbouzedi to Lincoln City (Undisclosed Fee)

On the 16th of December, it was announced that Irish under 21 winger Zack Elbouzedi would join League One side Lincoln City from Waterford United in January 2020 on a two year deal. Elbouzedi has impressed in both League of Ireland and Irish under 21 football so he will be hopeful of continuing his good form for Lincoln.

Conor Coventry to Lincoln City (Loan)

On the 10th of January, Irish under 21 international midfielder Conor Coventry joined Lincoln City from West Ham on loan until the end of the season. He Joined Irish team mate Elbouzedi at the League One side after signing a new three and a half year contract at West Ham. Coventry is another key asset for Stephen Kenny’s under 21 side.

Connor Ronan to Blackpool (Loan)

On the 17th of Janury, Irish under 21 international midfielder Connor Ronan joined League One side Blackpool from Wolves until the end of the season. Ronan spent the first half of this season on loan at Slovakian side DAC Dunajska Streda. His impressive form at Irish under 21 level has caught the eye of Mick McCarthy and he is considered one for the future at international level.

Jonathan Afolabi to Dunfermline (Loan)

On the 27th of January, Irish under 19 international striker Jonathan Afolabi joined Scottish side Dunfermline Athletic from Celtic on loan until the end of the season. Afolabi will be hoping to score goals for Dunfermline who are currently 5th in the Scottish Championship. The striker is considered a great prospect for Ireland in the future.
