League leaders Shamrock Rovers maintained their winning start to the season with a dominant display at the Showgrounds on Saturday night.
The Hoops took the lead on 23 minutes when Jack Byrne received the ball just inside the box from a Ronan Finn pass, the Irish international twisted and turned before putting the ball in the bottom right corner of the net.
However, ‘The Bit O’ Red’ equalized on the stroke of half time, when David Cawley was controversially taken down inside box, referee Paul Mc Laughlin pointed to the spot with Ronan Coughlan putting away the resulting penalty.
The Hoops came out on the front foot in the second half, looking to break down the Sligo backline with Jack Byrne coming closest with his effort just flying past the post. ‘The Bit O’ Red’ were proving a tough nut to crack.
Shamrock Rovers introduced Dylan Watts with 25 minutes to go. He made an immediate impact slotting Aaron McEneff in on goal who dispatched the ball home to put the Hoops in the lead with 15 minutes to play.
The league leaders scored another 5 minutes after when Dylan Watts pulled of some fantastic footwork inside the box before pulling the ball back to Aaron Greene who riffled the ball into the roof of the net to the delight of the travelling support.
Sligo youngster Niall Morahan grabbed his first goal for the club in injury time however it proved no more than a consolation for ‘The Bit O’ Red’ as Shamrock Rovers kept their 100 per cent record in tact.
