In the first of this weeks EA Sports Cup 1st Round matches, South Dublin side Cabinteely beat their fellow neighbours Crumlin United after extra time 4-3. There was plenty of twists and turns at a cold but sunny afternoon at Stradbrook.
Cabinteely opened up the scoring in the very first minute after Kevin Knight played through Kaito Akimoto who finished into the far right hand corner of the net. The Japanese forwards marking his debut with a goal. 14 minutes later Eoin McPhillips stepped up to take a free kick 25 yards out from goal and placed it superbly into the top left corner.
Crumlin tried desperately to get back into the game and their hard work paid off when Jamie Hollywood nodded back a Craig Walsh corner which found Stephen Larkin who tapped him from close range. Then followed more Crumlin chances but goalkeeper Corey Chambers was there to keep them out. United were then awarded a penalty to which Craig Walsh finished despite Chambers getting a palm to it.
Both sides had chances to win it in the normal time but the score remained the same so extra time followed. The drama also continued as Crumlin found themselves a goal up after good work from Jake Donnelly who played in Craig Walsh and the midfielder lobbed home his second of the game.
The match was not done yet tho as Marty Waters squared the ball to Dean Casey who fired up from 10 years. The left midfielders first goal for the club since September 2018. Then came the perfect ending for new signing Oliver White. The American scoring a last minute header in his first game for club.
It truly was a remarkable game of football on a Sunday afternoon. Full credit to both sides for entertaining the crowd. Cabinteely now go into the hat for the 2nd round.
